Major Thomas Stanley Whitworth was born in 1882 and entered the British Army in 1902 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the South Lancashire Regiment. Entering the Indian Army in 1903, he attained the rank of Major in 1917. In the Great War he served in Egypt, February to September 1915; France, September to December 1915 and in operations in Mohmand, 1916-17. For his services he was twice mentioned in despatches (
London Gazette, 28.7.1919 & 3.8.1920)
