Captain Norman Arthur Shove was born in 1886 and commissioned in March 1912 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the East Indian Volunteer Railway Rifles. Promoted Lieutenant in November 1914 in the I.A.R.O. He served during the Great War on the North West Frontier of India and with the Indian Corps in France, April to December 1917. Served in Waziristan and Iraq, January to November 1918 and in Egypt and Iraq in 1919. Promoted Captain in November 1918, he was awarded the Indian Volunteer Forces Officers’ Decoration on 12.4.1924 and attained the rank of Major in 1928. In 1935 his rank is given as Major (Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel), Officer Commanding the 2nd battalion East Indian Railway Regiment at Lucknow.
