John Legh Clowes was educated at Eton and the Central Technical College, South Kensington. Commissioned into the 6th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant soon after the outbreak of hostilties, he served in France and the Balkans, latterly as a Major attached to the Machine Gun Corps, and was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre.
