Geoffrey A. Cavis-Brown was serving as a Midshipman aboard H.M.S. King George V at the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, and was present in the same ship at the Battle of Jutland. Advanced to Sub. Lieutenant in October 1916, he was appointed to the recently launched destroyer Restless in the following year, and remained with her until the end of the War. Cavis-Brown was given his first command, as a Lieutenant, in 1919, when he joined the minesweeper Pytchley, and remained in the R.N. until placed on the Retired List in 1923.
