George Rippon was born in November 1861 and was commissioned into the 29th Madras Infantry as a 2nd Lieutenant in August 1880. Advanced to Lieutenant in July 1881, he ‘served in the Burmese Expedition of 1887-89; in the Wuntho Expedition of 1891 with the Southern Column; with the Manipore Expedition of 1891 as D.A.A.M.G. to the Tammin Column (mentioned in despatches), and the Expedition in the Northern Chin Hills of 1891-92 as Transport Officer, during the latter part of which as T.O. with the Burma Lushai Relief Column.’

Rippon was advanced to Captain in August 1881, and served as Commandant of his regiment with the rank of Major at the same time; substantive Major in August 1900 and Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1904. Placed on the Retired List in December 1912, he was recalled on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914 and served in the U.K. as C.O. of the 8th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment and latterly in the same capacity of the 25th (Reserve) Garrison Battalion, Rifle Brigade.
