Three: Armourer Sergeant T. Cottrell, 14th Light Dragoons

Name spelt ‘Cottrell’ on the Indian Mutiny and copied service papers, ‘Cottrill’ on the Punjab and ‘Cotterill’ on the I.G.S.

Thomas Cottrell was born in1820 in Birmingham and enlisted into the 14th Light Dragoons at Dorchester in 1841. With the Regiment he served in the Second Sikh War, being present at Ramnaghar, Chilianwala and Goojerat. He was with them in the Persian Campaign and again during the Indian Mutiny. In the latter war, he was present at the action at Koonch, the battle of Gallowlee, the advance on and capture of Calpee, capture of Gwalior and the action at Allepore. He was discharged in Dublin through being unfit for further service in 1861.
