Herbert Allen Townsley was born in 1892, and educated at Leeds Grammar School. During the Great War he served in the ranks of the R.A.M.C., with the 50th Field Ambulance in France for two years, before being commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps. He was killed in action on 14 October 1918, whilst engaged in an ammunition drop over Moorselle, his plane being hit by anti aircraft fire and brought down in flames. His Observer, 2nd Lieutenant F. J. Jackson was also killed. They are both buried at Dadizeele New British Cemetery, Belgium. See Lot 1173 for the medals to his brother.
