William Mitchell joined No. 41 Squadron as a Pilot on 9 August 1918. He was shot down by anti aircraft fire, whilst flying in an SE5a, near Champin. The mission was one of strafing and bombing enemy troops in support of the Ypres Salient push. The weather conditions were severe with heavy rainstorms, and Mitchell’s plane was one of five which did not return. Second Lieutenant Mitchell was severely wounded, and died in German hands twelve days later on the 10th October 1918. He is buried in Leuze Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
