Jack Eckersley Greenall was born in 1890, and educated at Sandroyd School, Eton College and Oxford. He joined the Duke of Lancaster’s Own Yeomanry in 1909, and stayed with that regiment until it was disbanded in 1917, at which time he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. Captain Greenall was killed in action on 31 March 1918, whilst acting as observer on an RE8, and is buried at St Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, France.

The following is extracted from The Warrington Guardian, 13 April 1918: ‘According to a letter from a fellow officer, Captain Greenall went up, with a Lieutenant as a Pilot, on a bombing patrol, when the machine was attacked by five enemy scouts, and Captain Greenall was killed almost immediately. The pilot was wounded, but landed the machine on the British side.’
