Three: Captain A. N. Edwards, 9th (Queen’s Royal) Lancers, fatally ‘gassed’ at Hooge on 24 May 1915, the same action in which Captain F. A. Grenfell, V.C. was killed

1914-15 Star (Capt., 9-Lrs.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt.); together with original card boxes of issue; printed transcript of Edward’s memorial service, held at Waltham Abbey Church; three original photographs of recipient; photograph of original grave marker, this with inscription ‘In Memory of Captain Edwards, (9th Q.R.) Arthur Noel Edwards was born in 1884, a native of Waltham Abbey, Essex, he was educated at Eton. A prolific polo player, described as ‘the best forward polo player in England’, he played both at regimental and national level. He was a contemporary of Captain F. O. Grenfell, V.C., 9th Lancers, who was also an accomplished polo player, tragically to be killed in the same action as Edwards.

Captain Edwards died as a result of gas poisoning on 24 May 1915, whilst serving with the 9th Lancers, and is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
