Arthur Noel Edwards was born in 1884, a native of Waltham Abbey, Essex, he was educated at Eton. A prolific polo player, described as ‘the best forward polo player in England’, he played both at regimental and national level. He was a contemporary of Captain F. O. Grenfell, V.C., 9th Lancers, who was also an accomplished polo player, tragically to be killed in the same action as Edwards.

Captain Edwards died as a result of gas poisoning on 24 May 1915, whilst serving with the 9th Lancers, and is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
