George Edward Raoul Thompson was born in Rio de Janeiro in January 1915 and originally entered the R.A.F. as a Halton Apprentice in September 1930. Transferring to the Royal Navy as a Leading Air Fitter, F.A.A., in March 1939, he served aboard the cruiser H.M.S. Liverpool from June of the same year until August 1940. Consequently present in her at the engagement fought against the Italians off Calabria in July of the latter year, he was fortunate to be posted back to Daedalus just prior to her participation in the Crete operations, when she was badly damaged by a torpedo. His next seagoing appointment, following service ashore at various Royal Naval Air Stations, was aboard the aircraft repair carrier Unicorn, between December 1943 and March 1945, which ship acted in support of the American landings on Okinawa. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal while serving at H.M.S. Condor, the Royal Naval Air Station at Arbroath, in March 1948, he was commissioned in October 1953 and retired towards the end of the decade; sold with photocopied R.A.F. and R.N. service records which confirm all of his awards, including the Coronation 1953 Medal.
