Leivis Thomas Labett was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1874.

He was born in Gosport, Hampshire in February 1836 and joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S.
Duke of Wellington in January 1855. Labett subsequently witnessed active service aboard the same ship in the Baltic operations, and again in August 1863, when he was present in the Pearl in the engagement off Kagoshima - see Naval Medals 1857-1880, by Douglas-Morris, for full details of this interesting encounter with the Japanese. He was finally discharged ashore from the Asia in June 1877.
