William Stoneman was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in November 1870.

He was born in Devonport in May 1826 and joined the Royal Navy aboard H.M.S.
Racer in March 1849. Appointed to the Carpenter’s Crew, he gained advancment to Carpenter’s Mate in the St. George in July 1853 and to Chief Carpenter’s Mate in the Steady in April 1861. Stoneman was finally discharged ashore from the Royalist in October 1870.
