William Mackett was awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in June 1857.

He was born in Kent in July 1814 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 3rd Class at Chatham Dockyard in November 1832. Having gained advancement to Ordinary Seaman during his first seagoing appointment aboard the Hastings between 1834-42, in which period he participated in the Syria operations of 1840, Mackett was discharged to shore from the Poictiers in March 1848. But he regained seagoing status aboard the Ocean two years later, and came ashore for the final time from the Waterloo in October 1856.
