William Walker was born at Plymouth in January 1833 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard the Royal Yacht William and Mary in November 1846. Advanced to Ordinary Seaman aboard the Ardent in August 1851, he went on to witness active service in the same ship in the Crimea War, including the Sebastopol and Azoff operations. Walker subsequently served in various capacities, his rates including Sailmaker’s Mate, Captain of the Maintop, Quarter-Master, Captain’s Coxswain and Boatswain’s Mate, until, in October 1869, he was appointed Admiral’s Coxswain in the Agincourt. He was finally pensioned ashore from the Duke of Wellington in June 1871, having received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in October of the previous year.
