Joseph Alfred Brown was born in London in January 1833 and joined the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Powerful in September 1850. Witnessing active service in the Baltic between1854-55, when aboard the Neptune, he removed to the Calcutta as an Able Seaman in March 1856 and went on to see further action in the Second China War. Brown was advanced to Leading Seaman in January 1864 and gained Petty Officer status with his appointment to Captain of the Mizen Top aboard the Euphrates in April 1870. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May of the following year, he served as a ‘Pensioner’ in the rate of Able Seaman aboard various harbour vessels until early 1876, when he came ashore for the final time.
