George Farrow joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Pelorus in August 1838, and was advanced to Able Seaman during the course of his service in the Baltic operations of 1854-55, when aboard the Edinburgh. Returning to the U.K. to take up appointment as a Boatman in May 1856, Farrow received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in May 1873, one of just 42 awards of the wide suspension variety to Coast Guard personnel. He was pensioned ashore in the same month.
