William Jordan was born in Devonport in April 1819 and joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Powerful in May 1839. Quickly witnessing active service in the same ship in the Syria operations of 1840, he also saw action in the Crimea, including the Sebastopol operations and Inkermann, when rated as a Ship’s Corporal in the Britannia. Jordan was advanced to Master at Arms aboard the Ajax in October 1856 and was finally pensioned ashore from the Exmouth in May 1861, in which year he received his L.S. & G.C. Medal.
