Board of Trade Medal for Gallantry in Saving Life at Sea, V.R., large silver medal (John McLennan, Wreck of the “Catherine” of Belfast, on 4th Septr. 1864) in its original damaged case of issue, the lid embossed with his name, nearly very fine and scarce £400-500

The crew of the Catherine of Belfast had taken to the rigging in consequence of the stranding of their vessel, and she being too far from the shore for the rocket lines to reach her, a boat was launched and manned by the persons named, who, at great risk, owing to the night being very dark, rain falling heavily, and a strong wind blowing, succeeded in rescuing the crew. Silver medals were awarded to Henry Lindsay, collector of customs, and John McLennan, chief boatman. Bronze medals were also awarded to the 7 mariners, all of Maryport, who manned the boats.
