Somerset Francis Saunderson was born on 7 August 1867, and first commissioned on 2 May 1888 into the 5th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was promoted to Captain on 25 September 1895, retired in July 1897, but was recalled for service in South Africa during the latter stages of the Boer War.
