Frederick Holt Robe entered the Army as an Ensign, 87th Regiment, in 1817. He was specially employed ‘on particular service’ during the Syrian campaign with the Anglo-Turkish forces in 1840 and 1841, including the advance on Gaza and the affair before Askelon (War Medal and Turkish Gold Medal). He was nominated a Civil Companion of the Bath for services as Lieutenant Governor of Southern Australia between the years 1845 and 1848. Promoted to Major-General in March 1862, he was appointed Colonel of the 95th Regiment in September 1869.

Frederick Robe came from a distinguished military family. He was the fourth son of Colonel Sir William Robe, K.C.B., K.H., K.T.S., who served in the Royal Artillery throughout the Peninsula wars and was awarded the Gold Cross with one clasp. The eldest son, Lieutenant William Livingstone Robe, also served in the Royal Artillery, received the Gold Medal with two clasps and was killed at Waterloo. The second son, Alexander Watt Robe, became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Engineers. The third son, Thomas Congreve Robe, became a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Artillery. The fifth son, George Mountain Sewell Robe, died as a Lieutenant in the 26th Bengal Native Infantry during the Burmese war in 1825. The four daughters were unmarried. The youngest, Vimiera, died at Woolwich in December 1893. She presented to the Royal Artillery Institution at Woolwich all the medals, orders and decorations of her father and eldest brother, together with miniature portraits of each of them.
