John Haran was born in Keighley, Yorkshire, and enlisted at Halifax for the Ist Battalion, aged 18 years. He served with the 2nd Battalion in the Boer War, was wounded at Venters Spruit, 17 January 1900, captured at Spion kop, 24 January 1900, later released, and died of Enteric Fever at Estcourt, South Africa, on 2 June 1900.
