Private T. Levitt was born in Haslingden, Lancs., and enlisted thereon 4 May 1892. He served with the second battalion in the Sudan and in South Africa. He was present at the action at Spion Kop, 24 January 1900, where he was taken prisoner, later being released. The released Lancashire Fusilier prisoners were formed into a composite battalion, of 400 men, commanded by Colonel Bullock of the Devon Regiment. This small battalion was sent to the small railway station at Honings Spruit, 20 miles north of Kroonstad, in the Orange River County, arriving on 22 June 1900. The Boers attacked the post shortly after the arrival of the battalion on the same day. Private Levitt was killed when Lieutenant Smith of the Gloucesters and a party of six Lancashire Fusiliers attempted to reach a culvert which was held by the Boers. Two men were killed, and Lieutenant Smith and two men were wounded.
