James Barry was born in St James, Suffolk, and was a cordwainer before enlisting in the 20th Foot. He was severely wounded by a gunshot during the actions in the Pyrenees resulting in the amputation of his right arm above the elbow. He was discharged to Chelsea Hospital as a Pensioner as a result of his disability on 7 September 1814. Another medal named to James Barry is held in the Regimental Museum at Bury, Lancashire.
