John Black was born in Cornwall in May 1822 and entered the service aboard Pylades as a Boy aged 13 years. He served as an Ordinary Seaman in China and as Captain of the Mizzen Top in New Zealand. He was re-rated as an A.B. when he became a Pensioner, a normal practise of the time, and received his L.S. & G.C. in December 1865.
