Charles Plumley was born at Landport, Hampshire, and joined the service as a Landsman aboard MELVILLE in October 1837, aged 23 years. He served as Quarter Master in the Crimea aboard FURY, and in the 2nd China War at the capture of the Taku Forts in 1860 aboard URGENT. He received his L.S. & G.C. in November 1862.

Confirmed on the medal rolls as one of the 101 recipients of the 1st China War medal with ‘China 1842’ and/or 2nd China War clasps, and is possibly entitled to the clasp ‘Taku Forts 1860’ in addition, one of only five of that combination.
