Henry John Kelly served as Assistant Clerk of HAZARD during the China War of 1842 in the Yang-tse-Kiang at the surrender of Nanking. He served in the same ship, as Clerk, during the New Zealand War 1845-46 and was present at the action at Kororarika (medal known to exist, sold as a pair by Sotheby in May 1900). He retired as Fleet Paymaster in 1886, and was Secretary of The Royal Naval Club of 1765, the Navy Club, and the Royal Navy and Army Club.
