Rear Admiral Frederick Wilmot Horton received his promotion to the rank of Commander on 6 January 1844 ‘.. for his spirited and zealous exertions in command of the boats of H.M.S. DIDO at the destruction of the forts, and settlements, belonging to the pirates in the Sarebus River on the coast of Borneo. He obtained the expressed approbation of the Commander in Chief, Sir William Parker and the Board of Admiralty ..’ (See: ‘Expedition to Borneo of H.M.S. Dido’ by Captain the Hon Henry Keppel R.N., 2 Vols., published 1846). He served aboard H.M. Ships CYGNET and KINGFISHER during 1846-47 whilst they were engaged on slave trade suppression off the West African Coast.
