Lieutenant Colonel S. C. Long served as Adjutant of the 1st Battalion during the Boer War, present at the Relief of Ladysmith, including action at Colenso; the actions at Val Kranz and Pieters Hill, where he was severely wounded on 23 February 1900; operations in Natal, including action at Laings Nek; and subsequent operations in Transvaal, east of Pretoria. His statement of services in the 1920 Army List suggests that he is additionally entitled to the King’s South Africa Medal.
