Edmond Carroll was born at Robertstown, Asketon, Limerick, and attested for the 75th Regiment at Limerick on 11 December 1849, aged 19. Despite his wounds, he was not invalided out and continued to serve until he requested his discharge, on termination of his second period of engagement, at Singapore on 27 June 1870.
