A Peninsula and Waterloo pair awarded to Private George McKay, 42nd Highlanders

Military General Service 1793-1814, 8 clasps, Busaco, Fuentes D’Onor, Ciudad Rodrigo, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive, Orthes, Toulouse (George McKay, 42nd Foot); Waterloo 1815 (George M’Kay, 42nd or R.H. Reg. Infantry) fitted with replacement silver clip and ring suspension, this with traces of brooch mounts to the obverse and some contact wear, otherwise nearly very fine, the first nearly extremely fine (2) £1800-2200

George McKay was born in the Parish of Farr, near Domach, Sutherland, and attested for the 42nd Regiment at Thurso, in the county of Caithness, on 1 January 1808, aged 17. He served five years in the Peninsula, seven months in Flanders and France, three years and six months in Gibraltar, was slightly wounded in the Peninsula and was present at the battle of Waterloo. During his period of service he was three times promoted to the rank of Corporal but each time reverted to the rank of Private, his total service in the rank of Corporal amounting to three years and 88 days. He was discharged at Glasgow on 22 November 1837. Sold with copy discharge papers.
