Ralph Worthington was serving with the 2nd Battalion of the 48th Foot at the beginning of 1803, in Captain Ashe’s company. In 1804 he was in Captain Tonyn’s company, and by the end of the following year he was in Captain Thwaites’ company. He sailed for the Peninsula with the 2nd Battalion in 1809, landing on 6 April, and spent 27 days in hospital from 27 June. He was promoted to Corporal in December 1809, and, after the battle of Albuhera, 16 May 1811, in which the regiment suffered very severely, the surviving rank and file were transferred to the 1st Battalion and sent home on recruiting duties. He was back in Spain with the 1st Battalion in time for the battle of Vittoria, 21 June 1813, and was promoted to Sergeant that same month. He was finally discharged on 3 November 1814.
