John William Everson was born at Driffield, Yorkshire, and enlisted for the Royal Artillery at Malton, Yorkshire, on 22 February 1898. He served in South Africa from February 1900 until invalided home the following May. Only one officer and 40 men received the Natal clasp from this unit.
