Arthur Everson was born at Chapleton, Leeds, Yorkshire, and enlisted for the West Yorkshire Regiment on 9 August 1892, aged 18 years 6 months. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 20 October 1899 until 10 September 1902. After further service at home he was placed on the Army Reserve in May 1903, and discharged 8 August 1904.
