Frank Carter enlisted for the 20th Hussars at Aldershot on 31 January 1874, aged 18. He was made Lance-Corporal in June 1876 and appointed Assistant Schoolmaster in February 1877. He was advanced to Corporal in July 1879, and from the same date made Lance-Sergeant, becoming Sergeant in February 1881. In February 1884, Carter embarked with two squadrons of the 20th Hussars for Egypt, arriving at Suakin on 15 March. The 20th Hussars served with Graham’s Field Force at Suakin and in the action at Tofrek. The regiment embarked for Cairo in early June 1885, and, from February to April 1886, Carter was attached to the 19th Hussars, before returning to England 13 April. He appears to have been discharged shortly afterwards. The 20th Hussars received 79 medals with these two clasps.
