Edward Finnegan enlisted at Dublin on 7 December 1872, under the name of Edward Cooper, when he was 17 years of age. He arrived in India in 1873 and was stationed at Umballa, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera and Cherat until the outbreak of war in 1878. In the name of ‘Cooper’ he served continuously with the 4th Rifle Brigade during the first campaign and was present at the capture of Ali Musjid. On 29 March 1879 he changed his name to Finnegan. He embarked for England on 31 January 1880 and was discharged to the Army Reserve at Winchester in March 1880.
