Ellis Greenwood was born at Oldham, Lancashire, in 1856, and enlisted into the 94th Regiment at Manchester on 14 August 1877. He served during the Zulu War of 1879, and from 21 December 1879 was at Lydenburg, and took part in the defence of that place from January to March 1881. On 19 February he was wounded by a gunshot in the chest and left lung, and was consequently invalided out on 6 December 1881.
