Richard Babbington was born at Boston, Lincolnshire, and enlisted for the 60th Rifles at Grantham on 8 July 1876. He served in the Zulu War of 1879 from March 1879, and during the Boer War of 1880-81. He was wounded at Ingogo River on 8 February 1881, by a gunshot in the right forearm, the bullet entering just above the wrist and passing up through the muscles of the forearm. He was consequently invalided out on 4 October 1881.
