Thomas Deakin originally enlisted, sometime in 1868, into the 55th Regiment, and served with them in India from 1869 to 1878. He transferred into the 58th Regiment on 28 March 1878, and served during the Zulu war of 1879 and the Boer War of 1880-81. He was severely wounded at Laing’s Nek on 28 January 1881, returned to England at the end of April 1881, and was discharged from the Army.
