Robert Heaney was born in the Parish of St Nicholas, Aberdeen, and enlisted for the 93rd Highlanders at Stirling Castle on 7 November 1865, aged 18. He was promoted to Corporal on 15 December 1870, and transferred to the Army Service Corps on 1 April 1872 as a Private, being promoted 2nd Corporal in September of the same year. Heaney was promoted Corporal in May 1874, Sergeant in December 1875, 3rd Class Staff Sergeant in January 1879, and 2nd Class Staff Sergeant in July 1881. He served during the Zulu war of 1879 (Medal) and the Egyptian war of 1882 (Medal and Bronze Star), and was discharged as medically unfit at Edinburgh on 8 September 1884.
