Henry Griffith Bowen was born at Newport, Pembrokeshire, on 8 August 1841. He was appointed Ensign in the 88th Foot on 29 October 1859, became Lieutenant on 6 August 1861, and Captain on 20 October 1869. He served in command of a detachment at East London during the Kaffir War of 1877-78, and in various operations during the Zulu War from March 1879. He was appointed Major on 22 December 1880, and retired, becoming Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel with the Essex Rifles Volunteers in July 1881. He died at West Bergholt on 16 August 1909.
