Charles Stuart was born in the Parish of St Andrews, near Shanbryde, Morayshire, and attested for the 2nd 21st Foot at Edinburgh on 25 February 1878. His service papers state that he served in Zululand 1879, Sekukuni 1879, in the Transvaal War 1880-1881, and in Burma 1885-87, although no mention is made of entitlement to a medal for the latter campaign. Many times imprisoned for being drunk on duty, he was placed on the Army Reserve on 1 March 1888, and discharged on 25 February 1890.
