William Crick was born at Boreham, near Chelmsford, Essex, and enlisted into the 5th Lancers at Westminster on 9 August 1875. He volunteered into the 17th Lancers on 19 February 1879 and embarked for Natal five days later, where he took part in the Zulu War. He remained in South Africa until the end of January 1880, after which he served at Canterbury until 12 August 1883, when he was placed on the Army Reserve. He was finally discharged at Canterbury on 12 August 1887.
