Michael Harvey was born at Blackwater, Armagh, and attested for the 65th Foot at Armagh on 4 November 1845, aged 18. He spent almost his entire military service, 19 years 4 months, in the Australasian Colonies, the 65th taking an active part in the campaign in New Zealand from 1860 to 1866. He was discharged at Devonport on 12 November 1866, at which time he was in possession of Five Good Conduct Badges.
