Jeremiah Meaghan was born in the Parish of St John’s, Kilkenny, and enlisted for the 61st Regiment at Kilkenny on 1 December 1852. He served abroad in the East Indies for 5 years 8 months; Mauritius, 13 months; Canada and Bermuda, 4 years 3 months; and in Nova Scotia, eighteen months. He married at South Camp, Aldershot, on 19 November 1861, when he was aged 27, and was discharged at Londonderry on 9 March 1874. Jeremiah Meaghan died at Dublin on 26 November 1903. Included amongst his documents are several relating to his son Christopher, who attended the School of the 61st Regiment from 1866 to 1872, and was appointed to a position with the General Post Office at Dublin. He became Assistant Superintendent at the Post Office in May 1898, and an original ‘Copy’ letter of thanks to the staff of the General Post Office, Dublin, from the C-in-C Forces in Ireland, dated 5 June 1916, suggests that he may have been present there during the rebellion in Dublin.
