Henry John Davies was born at Woolwich on 27 October 1824, elder son of Captain John Davies, Royal Artillery. He was appointed Ensign in the 32nd Regiment on 7 April 1843, and Lieutenant on 13 February 1846. He embarked for India on the troopship Edmundsbury in May 1846, and arrived at Calcutta on 29 August 1846. He was present during the 2nd siege operations before Mooltan, including the attack on the suburbs on 27 December 1848, storm and capture of the city, and surrender of the fortress. He was also present at the surrender of the fort and garrison of Cheniote, and at the battle of Goojerat. Promoted to Captain on 15 March 1853, he was placed on Half-pay in the 51st Regiment on 5 August the same year. Captain Davies died at Crickhowell on 28 May 1865.
