Chambers was born at Haddington and joined the Royal Artillery in Edinburgh on 5 July 1803, aged 17. He was promoted to Sergeant in April 1815, and to Staff Sergeant in October 1824, in which rank he served until November 1832, when he was reduced to Gunner by Court Martial for unknown reasons.
