Great Britain, RMS Teutonic, c.1910, an enamelled picture brooch, unsigned, vessel steaming right, detail picked out in black, red, blue, yellow and white enamel, 35mm. Extremely fine and rare, the colours fresh and attractive; with pin back for wear (£90-120)

RMS Teutonic, launched in January 1889, was the first ship built with a subsidy from the Admiralty so that, in time of war or national emergency, she could be converted quickly for naval operations. She took part in the naval review at Spithead in 1897 and was commandeered as Boer War troop transport in 1900. From 1907 Teutonic plied the Southampton-New York run. The vessel saw service as an armed merchant cruiser during World War I and was laid up in 1921
