A Great War M.M. group of six awarded to Sergeant Piper T. McDonald, 7th Battalion, Royal Highlanders

Military Medal, G.V.R. (1321 S. Piper, 1/7 R. Hdrs.-T.F.); Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (6273 Pte., Rl. Highrs.); 1914-15 Star (1321 Sjt. Piper, R. Highrs.); British War and Victory Medals (1321 Sjt., R. Highrs.); Territorial Force Efficiency Medal, G.V.R. (290056 Sjt. Piper, 7-R. Highrs.); together with: an ornate silver prize medal, 56mm x 40mm, inscribed ‘T. McDonald, 42 R.H., Champion of India for 5 years for Putting 16lb Ball’, hallmarked Glasgow 1889, with ring suspension; Bronze Prize Medal, 38mm, inscribed Tug O’War, 2nd, Pipe Major Macdonald, 7th Black Watch, 1918 France HD Armistice Spts.’; three other unnamed silver watch chain medals; Black Watch Piper’s plaid brooch and two other plaid brooches, the medals with heavy contact marks, therefore good fine and better (14) £600-800

The 7th Battalion landed in France in May 1915 and until the Armistice was engaged in trench warfare including the battles of Bazentin Ridge (High Wood), Pozieres Ridge, the Ancre (Beaumont Hamel), 1st battle of the Scarpe (Capture of Gavrelle), 2nd battle of the Scarpe (Roeux), battle of Pilkem Ridge (Hindenburg Farm), and the battle of Cambrai (Grand Ravine and Flesquieres). In 1918 the battalion was engaged in the 1st battle of Bapaume (Beaumetx, Morchies, Loupart Wood), battle of the Lys (Lestrem), battle of Tardenois (Bois de Courton), 2nd battle of Arras (Hyderabad Redoubt), and the battle of the Selle (Crossing of the Ecallion River).
