An interesting ‘Madras Riots’ K.P.M. awarded to Deputy Commissioner F. L. Mullaly, Madras City Police

King’s Police Medal, G.V.R. (Frederick L. Mullaly, Indian Police Service) nearly extremely fine £300-350

K.P.M. London Gazette 1 January 1931. The recommendation states ‘This officer did valuable service in the troubled conditions in Madras City owing to the Civil Disobedience Movement prior to the disorders of 27 April 1930. Throughout the disturbances on the evening of the 27th April his coolness, steadiness and gallantry were beyond praise, and his presence of mind and determination at a very critical moment on the shore, in turning away from a section of the mob which was rushing him and which he was then under orders to deal with, and attacking another section of the mob in the midst of which Inspector Challadurai seemed in the process of being murdered, and in which the Commissioner was alone, saved the lives of both the Commissioner and Mr Challadurai.’
